Returning Competition Announces Changes and Improvements for Second Annual Event

After the overwhelming success of last year’s event, the Springfield Rotary Club will implement changes and improvements in response to attendee and vendor feedback at the 2nd annual Gourmet Food Truck Competition Aug. 15 in Veterans Park.

Some of the biggest challenges at last year’s event concerned congestion around the food trucks and a food shortage. This year, refrigerated storage will be available for the vendors so they can store more food to meet the demand of event attendees. In addition, the food trucks will be parked along one side of the road so lines can flow more efficiently and foot traffic has room to navigate the park.

“The first year of an event always reveals the bumps, but we’re doing what we need to to smooth them out for this year,” said Edward Bell, Rotary member and Food Truck Competition marketing committee chair. “This year’s competition will be much improved and better than ever.”

Other improvements include using the competition’s website and social media channels to communicate parking instructions in the weeks leading up to the event; more beverage options that include non-alcoholic drinks, wine and craft beer; a mobile application compatible with iOS and Android phones that attendees can use to get live updates the day of the event and the food trucks’ menus.

This year, the Food Truck Competition will showcase 40 food trucks, in which half are returning and the other 20 are first-time competitors. Some of the cuisine options include gourmet hotdogs and sandwiches, seafood, Cuban, empanadas, Mexican/TexMex, BBQ, American, Jewish, Carolina Coastal, Italian, Farm Raised, Asian, Wood Fire Pizza, Mediterranean and delectable desserts.

All proceeds from the event, sponsored by Speedway, will benefit the Springfield Rotary Club’s charitable causes, including Services to People with Disabilities, Polio Plus and the International Project in Lesotho, Africa.
