From BalletMet to Hisham’s Food Truck: “Transferring one passion to another”

New to the Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition this year is Hisham’s Food Truck, offering the unique category of South African Cape Malay cuisine.

Hisham’s Food Truck was born in September of last year by Hisham himself and his wife, Olivia. The two danced together in the BalletMet in Columbus for 15 years. After deciding to move on to the next chapter of their lives, they wanted their career change to be another passion… food! Hisham shared that really it was just a matter of “transferring one passion to another passion.”

Hisham knows that the food they offer is very different than what most people in the U.S. are used to. “It is not like anything you’ve had,” shared Hisham. That’s why he feels so grateful that people have been so embracing and willing to try their unique cuisine. Hisham’s Food Truck also has a number of South Africans who support them and follow their truck to whatever location they are at. These people tell Hisham that just the smell of his food reminds them of home. “To be the reason for that is just so rewarding,” says Hisham.

All of the items Hisham’s Food Truck will be offering on their menu at the competition are his favorites from back home in South Africa. A few completely homemade items you can expect to be available to try are the Samoosa, a spicy ground beef filling in a thin, deep-fried pastry (which requires a 5-hour process to create 100… just saying); Hand Pies, pre-seasoned filling in a puff pastry baked in the oven; non-traditional curry and more.

Are your taste buds watering yet? Don’t miss Hisham’s Food Truck’s first appearance at the 6th annual Springfield Rotary Gourmet Food Truck Competition on Saturday, Aug. 17 in Veterans Park!
